Today, we experimented with soil and water to see if there are different components in soil. First, we filled our bottles half way up with water, then we added some soil and gave it a really good shake. We left it to settle and we could see that the heavier materials sank to the bottom and the lighter material floated on the top. We learned that the material floating on top was organic and is called humus. The heavier materials are sand and gravel, silt, clay with the humus on top. It was a very exciting and interesting experiment.
