Dear Parents,
Below is an overview of the curriculum areas we will be covering in Year 4 throughout the Summer term. We look forward to introducing the children to some exciting new topics such as the Egyptians.
Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be collected in on a Wednesday. This will consist of spellings, reading books, maths and reading comprehension activities. Please note, children need to complete two reading comprehension tasks per week.

Journalistic Text- (2 weeks) Here, children will be exposed to experience of press releases, news reports and broadcasts. They will focus on headlines and features of newspapers. Interview others, gathering information and quotes. Finally, Produce their own articles about the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb.
The Firework Maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman (3 weeks) Contemporary fiction. Children will be reading the text, exploring the language used, inferring how the character felt and analysing language choices. The children will be writing: character descriptions, story maps and letters related to the text and characters.
Playscripts (2 weeks) Children will be exploring Bible stories from the Old Testament including Moses and King David. They will be looking at the features of a playscript and rewriting Bible stories in the form of a playscript.
Poetry week Haiku’s (1 week) Children will be reading a range of Haiku’s and identify the features. Along with this, they will be writing their own Haiku and performing them.
Explanation Texts (2 weeks) Children will be reading, responding to and exploring the features of an explanation text. They will be creating their own explanation texts that are linked to our science topic of ‘Sound’.
Persuasion (2 weeks) Children will be reading a range of different persuasive texts and then writing their own that is linked to a class text at the time.
