CURRICULUM INFORMATION

 

Year Group 4

 

TERM Spring Term

 

Dear Parents,

 

Below is an overview of the topic areas which we will be covering in year 4 during the Autumn term.

 

Any questions please feel free to contact your child’s class teacher using the parent link.

Thank you for your support.

 

Homework is to be handed in every Monday morning.

A weekly spelling test will take place every Thursday morning.

 

Homework will be sent home by Tuesday of each week

Each week the children will receive

  • weekly spellings
  • Written Maths homework / Mathletics on alternative weeks
  • Written Comprehension / Grammar on alternative weeks
  • All children are expected to read every night and an adult must sign their reading diary.

  • identify common appliances that run on electricity
  • construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers
  • identify whether or not a lamp will light in a simple series circuit, based on whether or not the lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery
  • recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit
  • recognise some common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors.

CHRISTMAS

 In this unit of work the children will study the role of angels in the story of Christmas. They will learn about Christians being messengers of Christ’s Good News in the world today and how the Church celebrates the Feast of Christmas.

 

JESUS: LIGHT OF THE WORLD AND BELOVED SON

In this unit the children study some important stories about the life of Jesus and the revelation of his presence in the world. The will also learn about some of the symbols of Baptism and their association with belonging to the Family of God.

 

OLD TESTAMENT: MOSES – KING DAVID TESTAMENT: MOSES – KING DAVID

In this unit the children will study some important stories about Moses and God’s relationship with the people of Israel. They will also learn about the life of King David. Through this unit children will be introduced to some images of God associated with these stories and also some important religious themes such as prayer and vocation which arise from this study.

 

LENT: LIVING AS FOLLOWERS OF JESUS TODAY

In this unit the children will explore some of the customs and practices associated with the celebration of the Season of Lent. Through the life and teaching of Christ they will learn about prayer, fasting and almsgiving and the forgiveness that God offers to those who believe in him.

Ancient Egypt – 

 

• Understand what was important to people during ancient Egyptian times.

• Compare the powers of different Egyptian gods.

• Find Egypt on a map.

• Raise questions when confronted with an artefact in order to understand more about this ancient civilisation and select information that is useful in understanding the use of hieroglyphs as a form of communication and recording.

• Address and sometimes devise historically valid questions about change, cause,

similarity by learning about the daily lives of many ancient Egyptian people.

• Construct informed responses that involve thoughtful selection and organisation of

relevant historical information.

• Understand how evidence can give us different answers about the discovery of

Tutankhamun's tomb, noting connections, contrasts and trends over time.

• Develop the appropriate use of historical terms such as 'BC/AD', 'civilisation' and

  • Measure ingredients to the nearest millilitre accurately and assemble or cook ingredients.

 

  • Explain that a variety of food is needed in the diet because different foods contain different substances that are needed for health.
  • Explain seasonality and understand how the weather affects certain plants.
  • Understand how to control the temperature of the hob when cooking.
